
Five reasons to choose a HBCU
What does Oprah Winfrey, Martin Luther King Jr., and 2 Chainz have in common? They have all graduated from a HBCU. A HBCU is a historically black college/university. They all have a common mission, which is to provide quality education and foster success for African-Americans college students. Here are five reasons why you should consider attending a HBCU.
HBCUs provide quality education. HBCUs are known for producing black scholars, especially in the STEM fields. For example, Xavier University educates the most black doctors in America.
HBCUs value diversity. A common myth is that HBCUs do not provide diverse atmosphere since there is a focus on African-American students. However, HBCUs educate students of all races, ethnicities, and nationalities.
HBCUs cultivate pride. HBCUs provide spaces for African Americans to discuss relevant issues and learn more about their history
HBCUs are affordable. HBCUs are dedicated to seeing students through graduation. The most expensive HBCUs are still below the national average for tuition. Be sure to speak with your guidance counselor and do your own research on tuition, board, and fees.
HBCUs are all over the nation. There are 101 HBCUs in the U.S.–you can choose one of the five institutions in Louisiana, head to Atlanta, Georgia for Clark Atlanta University. or go north for Howard University.
